Ever since I was young, the natural world has fascinated me. I have always had a love for wildlife and nature, it is a part of us and to be able to spend time in it is a great privilege.
Sometimes words cannot describe the beauty of this world, and the sadness it can bring. The only way is by experiencing the moment, and if you can't be there, looking at images that take you there can be the next best thing.
Being able to express yourself is a skill you can develop through practice. Freedom of expression is paramount in communicating thoughts and ideas to others that may not have thought about a subject in the same way you would yourself.
At age seventeen during a graphic design course, I was exposed to the world of photography, this subject appealed very much as I had (and still do at times!) difficulty expressing my thoughts verbally, so photography was the perfect medium to enable me to communicate ideas effectively.
Many, many rolls of film later, projects soon gravitated towards nature, wildlife, and the relationship we have with animals and how they fit into the world we have created.
After graduating with a BA Honours in Photographic Arts, I journeyed to South Africa where I trained as a safari field guide. I had the amazing opportunity to observe, photograph and learn about wildlife and the environments they inhabit.
I have a great interest in human nature and the relationship we have with the natural world. My aim is to collaborate these interests to create images that not only reflect on human experience but to ponder the world that we find ourselves in. I want us to be able to reconnect with nature, we are apart of it, not separate from. Nature is so important to us and we can't live without it. It is vital for our survival and our well being.
Studying photography was a wonderful experience, I had amazing teachers who gave me the tools I needed to develop my own voice and style. It gives me a great sense of achievement to be able to share my knowledge and I’m now in the process of teaching workshops in photography for beginners. Please visit the workshops page for more information.
